Songwriter Stuff

Songwriter Stuff
By: Dan Divine

I know writers are supposed to be adding to the content of this site and I have done nothing up to now. I did however have something in mind so here goes. Most of you who know me know that I sing only good enough for campfires and such. Probably sing better if the room is involved in alcohol. But I do like to try and write songs. I know there are alot of you out there who are very talented songwriters. Our area is blessed with lots of good writers from what I've seen and heard. A few of us are well on their way to making something happen in their careers so their songs will be heard. But what about folks like me who are not going to be getting calls to perform? I thought a page for sharing information, and ideas would be good. I recently got a nice e-mail from a producer in Nashville who kinda says what were up against. I will share this with you and I was at a songwriter workshop in Pittsburg a while back and got a list of song contests that are supposedly on the up and up. Anyway keep writin and if I can help in any way feel free to contact me, and please share any info. you have that can help the rest of us. On second thought I never asked the producer if I could quote him on here so I'll just relay the info to ya. Basicly, he said The songs that are picked are from staff writers. Most producers that will take a song from an unknown wont have the clout to get it cut. The major acts are scared to take material because they're constantly getting sued every time a song even remotely resembles one they've been pitched. He said his best advice was move to Nashville play the political game. I will quote him on one line, the last line. " Unfortunately that discourages a lot of great writers from even being given a chance." My hope of this page is to help any songwriter to have a chance at being heard. Together maybe we can.
Here is a list of contests I have.

Our regular monthly Songwriter Night at the Nevada, Mo V.F.W. will be May 9, 8-11pm. Please sign-up by 7:30 if you can. Or you can e-mail me at divinesongs@gmail.com. Please tell your friends, it'd be great to see more people out to listen to the songs. Since it's in the back room at the VFW you don't have to be 21. Then on Sat. May 10th is the singer/songwsriter night at Capones in ElDorado Springs. Sign-up by 8:30 pm or call 417-876-2211. If you don't know where it is it was the country club on the west edge of town right on 54 highway on the north side. Great place, Great food, and one of the best crowds for listening to lyrics in the area. I always have a good time there and have been treated great. They may just treat me good cause I'm old but I'm ok with that. Great time, try and make em both.

Dangerousdoug ASCAP Launches Bill Of Rights For Songwriters / Composers (pt. 1) 1 Apr 27 2008, 4:23 PM EDT by Dangerousdoug

This article was writen By: Andy Martin

To remind the public, members of the music industry and U.S.
legislators of the central role and rights of those who conceive
and create music, ASCAP (the American Society of Composers,
Authors and Publishers) today officially launched a 'Bill of Rights
for Songwriters and Composers.'

This awareness-building initiative centers around 10 core
principles, including "We have the right to be compensated for
the use of our creative works, and share in the revenues that
they generate" and "We have the right to license our works and
control the ways in which they are used." (See full text of the Bill
below and at www.ascap.com/rights/billText.aspx)

These rights, all of which are already inherent in the act of music
creation and protected by U.S. copyright law, are increasingly
under threat as competing interests argue over the future of the
business of music - and as growing numbers of individuals
bypass payment altogether to illegally share music online.

"Given the many issues surrounding the music industry today, it
can be all too easy to overlook the source of it all - individual
songwriters, lyricists and composers," said ASCAP President and
Chairman and Academy Award-winning lyricist, Marilyn
Bergman. "That is why ASCAP has launched this Bill of Rights for
Songwriters and Composers. Our goal is to remind lawmakers,
the general public and music creators themselves of the rights
that are inherent in their art. We simply cannot allow the original
source of all music to be lost in the shuffle."

I wanted to make an addition to this page, as I am a songwriter from the area. I hope this will inspire songwriters that are looking for new ways to get thier music out to the world.

#1. Social Networking
As most of you already know Myspace, and other similar social networks are awesome places to post your demos/recordings of your songs. Myspace and Facebook seem to be the most active of them, and right now the average You Tube viewer stays on there for at a min. of 15 minutes, that is amazing for the point and click world where three to ten seconds is the national averageis right now. I can only imagine how long people are staying on Facebook (the college fav) and Myspace (the over-all most popular). What is great about these is you can keep people up to date by bloging, and posting videos of your songs (very easy to do and usually free) as well as passing lyrics, and colecting feedback, all the while meeting industry people very easy through serch engines. Here is a list of the most popular socal networks (most are free to join also)
